Career
Vicente Fernandez started his musical career by singing for tips in the streets of Guadalajara, Mexico.
Professionally, Fernandez had to wait a decade. After the death of one of the great rancheras giants, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, in 1973, Fernandez became a musical icon. His succeeding albums, El rey, El hijo del pueblo, and Para recordar, sold millions of copies.
The sales of Fernando Z. Maldonado’s 1972 single Volver Volver boosted his fame throughout the country and the American continent in 1976. In addition to Chavela Vargas and Ry Cooder, it has been covered by Nana Mouskouri.
As a result of this change in style, Fernandez’s compositions became more oriented toward migration. Indeed, the song Los Mandados propagated macho and patriotic themes.
These were the years he built his music production studio, “Los 3 Potrillos,” on his property. In 1983, he released 15 Grandes con el Numero Uno, the first million-selling album. In 1984, he gathered 54,000 people to Mexico City’s Plaza de Toros.
His first tour outside the US and Mexico was in Bolivia and Colombia in 1987. In 1991, the US press dubbed Fernandez the “Mexican Sinatra,” and he recorded ranchera classics like José Alfredo Jiménez (1990), Aunque me duela el alma (1995), Divine Women, I’m quitting between us (1998).
His son Vicente Jr. was kidnapped in 1998 by the “Mocho Dedos” for $5 million. Vicente Jr. was abandoned 121 days after his father paid $3.2 million to free him. His fingers were gone. Fernandez did all of this without informing the authorities, and he and his son Alejandro kept performing to maintain public order. The kidnappers got 50 years in 2008.
