Career
Steve Jobs started his career by working as a video game designer. In February 1974, Jobs returned to his parents’ Los Altos home to look for employment. Atari, Inc. in Los Gatos, California, hired him as a technician. Steve Wozniak designed a version of Pong for Jobs in 1973.
Jobs was hired by Atari, according to Wozniak, because he took the board to the company and persuaded them he built it. “He was frequently the brightest guy in the room, and he let everyone know it,” said Nolan Bushnell, Atari’s developer.
During this period, Jobs and Brennan maintained their relationship despite seeing other people. Towards the end of 1973, Jobs was living a “simple life” in a Los Gatos cabin, working at Atari, and saving money for a planned trip to India.
Jobs went to Neem Karoli Baba’s Kainchi ashram in mid-1974 with Reed’s friend (and future Apple employee) Daniel Kottke. They found the Neem Karoli ashram mainly vacant after Neem Karoli Baba died in September 1973. They hiked up a dry riverbed to Haidakhan Babaji’s ashram.
Jobs left India after seven months and arrived before Daniel Kottke. Jobs shaved his head and wore traditional Indian attire. Jobs used LSD at this period, characterizing it as “one of the two or three most important things [he] had done in [his] life.” The All One Farm in Oregon was his destination. Brennan visited him there.
