Career

Prince Philip started his career by joining the Navy. Philip departed Gordonstoun in early 1939 for a year as a cadet at Dartmouth. In mid-1939, he went to Greece and spent a month with his mother. He returned to Britain in September at George II’s request (his first cousin). The next year, he graduated as the class’s top cadet. His two brothers-in-law, Prince Christoph of Hesse and Berthold, Margrave of Baden, fought for the opposing German side.

Philip became a midshipman in January 1940. He spent four months on the battleship HMS Ramillies protecting AEF convoys in the Indian Ocean, then on the battleships HMS Kent, HMS Shropshire, and in British Ceylon. After Italy invaded Greece in October 1940, he was sent to the Mediterranean Fleet’s battleship HMS Valiant.

Philip was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant on 1 February 1941, after completing four out of five sections of the qualifying exam in Portsmouth. His exploits during the Battle of Cape Matapan, where he was in command of the battleship’s searchlights, were noted in dispatches. He also received the Greek War Cross. In June 1942, he was sent to the destroyer HMS Wallace, which escorted convoys along the UK’s east coast and took part in the Allied invasion of Sicily.

Lieutenant on 16 July 1942. His first lieutenancy of HMS Wallace in October of that year made him one of the Royal Navy’s youngest first lieutenants aged 21. A night bomber attack on Wallace’s ship in July 1943. He devised a plan to hide a raft with smoke floats from the bombers. In the year 1944, he joined the 27th Destroyer Flotilla of the British Pacific Fleet aboard the newly built destroyer HMS Whelp. He was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered. When Philip returned to the UK in January 1946 onboard the Whelp, he was posted to HMS Royal Arthur, the Petty Officers’ School at Corsham, Wiltshire.
