Career
Pelé started his career as a footballer. To join Santos FC, de Brito dispatched Pelé to Santos, a port and industrial city near Sao Paulo, assuring the club’s management he would be “the finest football player in the world.”
A tryout at the Estádio Vila Belmiro attracted Santos coach Lula, and he was signed in June 1956. Pelé was hailed as a future superstar by the local press.
On 7 September 1956, at the age of 15, he made his senior team debut against Corinthians Santo Andre, scoring his first goal in a productive career.
Pelé started the year 1957 season as the league’s leading scorer at the age of 16. In the year 2010, ten months after becoming pro, he was called up to the Brazilian national squad. Rich European teams like Real Madrid, Juventus, and Manchester United tried unsuccessfully to recruit him after the year 1958 and the year 1962 World Cups; Inter Milan even won him a permanent deal, but Angelo Moratti was forced to abandon it at the behest of Santos’ chairman due to a fan uprising. The Brazilian government declared Pelé an “official national treasure” in the year 1961, under President Jânio Quadros, to avoid his expulsion.
In the year 1958, Santos won the Campeonato Paulista, and Pelé scored 58 goals, a record that stands today. A year later, he helped the team win their first Torneio Rio-Sa Paulo, 3–0 against Vasco da Gama. Santos, on the other side, lost the Paulista title. Pelé scored 33 goals in 1960 to help his team win the Campeonato Paulista, but they finished ninth in Rio-Sa Paulo.
