Career
Natalie Portman started her career by starring in films. She was cast in Léon: The Professional six months after Ruthless (1994).
She used her paternal grandmother’s maiden name, Portman, for secrecy. Mathilda portrays a middle-aged hitman who befriends an orphan (played by Jean Reno). Her parents initially refused to let her show the part due to the script’s eroticism and violence.
Once Besson eliminated nudity and killings, they accepted. Portman felt the picture was no longer insulting when these passages were deleted. “Sexual twists and turns” weren’t in the script, but her mother was upset. Peter Rainer of the Los Angeles Times claimed Portman “isn’t an actress to unroll Mathilda’s pain,” and he questioned Besson’s sexualization of her character.
Marya Cohn’s short film Developing was filmed during her 1994 summer vacation following The Professional. When her mother, Frances Conroy, died of cancer, she played a child having to care for her mother alone. She portrayed Anne of Green Gables at Stagedoor Manor’s camp.
Michael Mann selected her as Al Pacino’s stepdaughter in Heat because she could convey dysfunction without hysteria.
Ted Demme cast her in Beautiful Girls as a precocious teen who has a romance with her elder neighbor (Timothy Hutton) (1996). She steals every moment she’s in, says NYT reviewer Janet Maslin. She then saw Cabaret at Stagedoor Manor. She starred in 1996’s Everyone Says I Love You and Mars Attacks!
She had to withdraw from Romeo + Juliet (1996) because she was too young. The director commented, “Natalie looked excellent in the footage, but she was too young.
She turned down the part of Lolita in Adrian Lyne’s film version of the same novel due to its sexual overtones. “It intimidated me and made me cautious about performing sexy things,” she remarked, adding that her roles in The Professional and Beautiful Girls led to calls to play a sexualized teen.
