Kamaru Usman’s father Muhammed Nasiru Usman was a Nigerian Army Major. Kamaru’s mother, Mrs. Usman, was a teacher by profession.
Kamaru has two siblings. Kashetu Usman is a Pharmacist doctor and his other brother, Mohammed Usman is also an MMA fighter.
Despite growing up under a lovely blanket of motherly love and affection, the family underwent rough conditions, both financially and otherwise. Career
He started his early days wrestling while in high school. Usman acquired the epithet “Marty” when he rejoined the squad since his wrestling coach at the time had difficulty uttering his initial name, Kamarudeen, and it lasted with him throughout his collegiate wrestling career.
He used to train with Joe Jones before leaving for his senior education.
Usman wrestled for William Penn University in Iowa for one year, where he was an NAIA national championship qualifier in 2007, but was unable to occur due to a blizzard; half of his squad and coaching staff, however, had left early for the tourney without him, which infuriated Usman and impacted him to abandon William Penn.
He decided to switch to the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK), which had earlier sought to acquire him under the guidance of then-UNK wrestler Tervel Dlagnev. He helped the Lopers to win the 2008 title which also was the first-ever title clinched by the team. In 2010, he claimed the NCAA Division II national championship at 174 pounds, concluding the campaign with a 44–1 record and 30 straight victories.
Usman switched to freestyle wrestling shortly after his folkstyle career ended, and he became a student at the United States Olympic Training Center. Usman wanted to make it into the Olympic Squad of 2012.
Despite having reached the US University World Team in 2010, Usman was sidelined by ailments and later abandoned his Olympic dream after missing to qualify for the ’12 US Olympic Team Tryouts. He then pursued mixed martial arts.
