Jerry Seinfeld started his career as a stand-up comedian. He became interested in stand-up comedy after college performances. Budd Friedman’s Improv Club used to provide open mic nights for Queens College students. After finishing college in 1976, he was approved for Rodney Dangerfield’s HBO special at NYC’s Catch a Rising Star.
Benson hired him as Frankie, a mail-delivery boy with a comedy act no one wanted to hear in 1980. Seinfeld was fired on artistic differences. During a read-through for an episode, Seinfeld realized he’d been fired, he said. Seinfeld performed on Late Night with David Letterman and The Late Show with David Letterman after his Tonight Show debut in May 1981. 1987’s Stand-Up Confidential was his debut HBO special.
