Ja Morant started his career by playing basketball with Murray street racers. ESPN, 247Sports, and Rivals did not rank Morant. It was his only NCAA Division I offer.
Murray State spotted him by happenstance in July 2016 when assistant coach James Kane attended a camp looking for a player.
Inquisitive, Kane phoned head coach Matt McMahon, who swiftly offered Morant a scholarship. Morant committed to Murray State over dinner on 3 September 2016. But, as his father said, “you don’t go where you want; you go where they want.”
He also had offers from Duquesne, Maryland Eastern Shore, South Carolina State, and Wofford.
On 20 October 2021, Morant recorded 37 points and six assists against the Cleveland Cavaliers. On 24 October, he had 40 points and 10 assists in the Lakers’ 121–118 loss.
Morant had 41 points and six three-pointers in Memphis’ 104–99 victory against the Lakers on 29 December. On 4 January 2022, Morant topped all scorers with 36 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
Morant led Memphis to a 117–112 overtime win against the Golden State Warriors on 21 May 2021, in the newly revived Play-In Tournament, securing the Grizzlies’ first postseason trip in four seasons.
Two days later, he helped the Grizzlies upset the top-seeded Utah Jazz 112–109 in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs. A second-half surge by Morant helped Memphis lose 141–129. The Grizzlies were eliminated from the playoffs in five games.
