Career
David Beckham started his career as a footballer. He joined Manchester United as a trainee on 8 July 1991 and helped the club win the FA Youth Cup in May 1992. There was also Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.
On 14 April 1992, Beckham scored Manchester United’s second goal in a 3–1 first-leg win against Crystal Palace. On 15 May, Beckham played the whole 90 minutes of the second leg, in which Manchester United won 3–2 and 6–3. On 23 September 1992, Beckham made his first-team debut, replacing Andrei Kanchelskis in a League Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion. On 23 January 1993, Beckham signed as a pro.
Manchester United played Leeds United in the FA Youth Cup final. On 10 May 1993, Beckham started but was substituted by Robbie Savage in Manchester United’s 2–0 home loss.
On 13 May 1993, Beckham played the whole 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 2–1 defeat, earning Leeds United a 4–1 aggregate win. Beckham also won a league title with the club’s reserve team in the year 1994.
In a League Cup encounter against Port Vale in September 1994, Beckham made his full debut. On 7 December 1994, Beckham scored in a 4–0 victory against Galatasaray at home in the group stage’s last game. A victory didn’t change their group placement, one point behind Barcelona.
Beckham then played the part of the 1994 to 1995 season on loan with Preston North End. He made an impact, scoring twice in five games, one from a corner kick.
On 2 April 1995, Beckham made his Manchester United Premier League debut against Leeds United. In that season, United finished second behind Blackburn Rovers and lost out on a third straight Premier League title by a single point. On 20 May, United lost the FA Cup final 1–0 against Everton, leaving the club trophyless for the first time since the year 1989.
Sir Alex Ferguson, United’s manager, had high hopes for his young players. Beckham was one of Ferguson’s “Fledglings” of young players recruited in the 1990s, along with Nicky Butt, Gary, and Phil Neville.
Many criticized him for replacing veteran players Paul Ince, Mark Hughes, and Andrei Kanchelskis with youth team players rather than acquiring star players from other clubs (United had been connected with Darren Anderton, Marc Overmars, and Roberto Baggio that summer). The criticism grew when United lost 3–1 to Aston Villa, with Beckham scoring the only goal. Despite this early season loss, United’s youthful players performed admirably.
Beckham helped United win the Premier League and FA Cup double that season, scoring the game-winning goal against Chelsea in the semi-final and delivering the corner from which Eric Cantona scored in the FA Cup Final.
United was 10 points behind leaders Newcastle United at the start of the season, but Beckham and his colleagues overtook the Tynesiders by mid-March, and they stayed there until the conclusion of the season. Trotz his excellent form for Manchester United, Beckham was not chosen for England’s Euro 1996 squad.
