Caitlyn Jenner started her career by participating and winning in Decathlon. The men’s decathlon at the 1972 US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, saw Jenner climb up to fifth place behind Steve Gough and Andrew Pettes with one event remaining on the Fourth of July.
Despite finishing 19 seconds behind Gough in the 1500 meters, Jenner qualified for the Olympic team by finishing first. “Who is Jenner?” asked Eugene Register-Guard. Jenner placed tenth in the decathlon in the trials at Munich, West Germany.
Jenner was inspired to practice hard after witnessing Soviet Mykola Avilov win. “I finally realized what I wanted in life, and this individual possessed everything.” That night at 12 midnight, I started running around Munich, Germany, in preparation for the Games. From that day until the 1976 Olympics, I trained 6–8 hours per day, every day.
After Graceland, Jenner married Chrystie Crownover and moved to San Jose, California. Crownover was a United Airlines flight attendant and earned the most. Jenner made $9,000 a year as a trainer and an insurance salesperson. Athletes from the United States were not allowed to train like this before. Unlike amateur American athletics, Soviet athletes were state-sponsored.
During this time, Jenner attended San Jose City College and San Jose State University. “Track Capital of the World” San Jose athletics centered on SJCC coach Bert Bonanno. Others who trained at San Jose were Millard Hampton, Andre Phillips, John Powell, Mac Wilkins, and Al Feuerbach. Jenner dominated the hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 meters on day two.
Jenner won the men’s decathlon in 1974 and was featured on the cover of Track & Field News in August. On tour in the year 1975, Jenner won the French national championship and a gold medal at the Pan American Games, with 8,045 points.
