Bob Ross started his career as a carpenter. Hank Snow invited Ross on stage at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry in 1987.

The crowd exploded in cheers; he was first nervous, but soon recovered after telling a joke. Ross then taught Snow to paint privately.

Ross visited New York City often to promote his hardback book, The Best of Bob Ross’ Joy of Painting, and painting techniques. While in 1989, he was featured on The Joan Rivers Show.

On a live show with Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford in 1992. In 1994, Ross brought five audience members onstage to paint alongside him. Donahue also painted throughout the exhibition.

In the early 1990s, Ross featured in several MTV commercials that “coincided beautifully with Generation X’s increasing love with all things sardonic and vintage.”

Ross’ final public television appearance was on the first episode of The Adventures of Elmer and Friends in 1995 when he was ill. That year, Ross died. The show ended with Ross thanking his fans and viewers and a musical tribute. During his 20 years in the Air Force, Ross took an art class at the Anchorage USO club. He often disagreed with his abstract art-focused painting instructors. “They’d tell you what a tree is, but not how to paint one,” Ross remarked.

Bill Alexander’s television show The Magic of Oil Painting:17–18 Alexander employed a 16th-century painting method called Alla prima (Italian for “the first attempt”), which he completed in thirty minutes. Ross studied the technique and began painting Alaskan landscapes on novelty gold-mining pans. Ross’s commercial earnings surpassed his military salary. In 1981, he left the Air Force as a master sergeant.

His “Alexander Magic Art Supplies Company” sent him back to Florida to study painting with Alexander. Annette Kowalski, a client from Clearwater, Florida, convinced Ross he could thrive alone. She lent money to Ross and his wife to establish his company, which initially failed.
