Adar Poonawalla started his career after the completion of his graduate course. He joined his father’s Serum Institute in 2001 and especially concentrated on the company’s international market by exporting its products in nearly 35 countries across the globe.
He also worked on getting new products licensed and pre-qualified by the World Health Organization. He started supplying his company’s products to United Nations Agencies like UNICEF and PAHO.
After Adar joined the company, they started exporting their products to almost 140 countries and 85 percent of their total revenue is from overseas. Later on, he became the CEO of the Serum Institute with full control of the company’s day to day operations.
In 2012, his company acquired a Netherland-based government vaccine manufacturing company Bilthoven Biologicals and in 2017 he acquired the Praha Vaccine Limited in the Czech Republic.
In 2014, his Serum Institute has initiated and launched an oral polio vaccine which later became a bestseller product of the company. As per reports, he also planned to expand the product portfolio and decided to include vaccines for dengue, flu, and cervical cancer.
As the CEO of the company every year, he plans to launch a new vaccine for public health and to expand his product portfolio.

Adar Poonawalla made headlines many times in his career. In 2013, he made headlines after Forbes India named him as one of the “Four Scions to Watch Out For”, later that year he hosted Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for a private visit at his Serum Institute’s manufacturing facility in India. In 2014, he and his father bid a whopping amount of 550 million Euros for the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
In 2014, Cyrus Poonawalla group had invested 100 Crore rupees for clean Pune initiative and the Clean City initiative was inaugurated at Serum Institute of India, Pune by former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis.
