At the beginning of 2011, Sladen was diagnosed with cancer, and he passed away on 19 April 2011. She was 65 at the time of her death. Her death was widely reported in the UK, appearing on the BBC One Ten O’Clock News, as one of the day’s rolling headlines on the BBC News channel, and prominently on numerous commercial television news reports (including Granada, which serves her hometown of Liverpool), as well as on the front pages of the Daily Mirror and the Liverpool Echo. The next Saturday, the first episode of Doctor Who’s sixth season, “The Impossible Astronaut,” was shown, and it began with a screen honoring her memory.
