Drew Brees started his career by playing quarterback at the Westlake High School. Brees didn’t start playing tackle football until he was in high school when he was on the same flag football squad as actor Ben McKenzie.
He lettered in baseball, basketball, and football in high school and planned to play baseball in college rather than football. When Brees injured his knee in the eleventh grade, college recruiters raced to his aid.
In 1996, despite an ACL injury, he led Austin Westlake High School to a 16–0 record and a state championship. In high school, Brees completed 314 of 490 passes (64.1%) for 5,461 yards and 50 touchdowns, including 211 of 333 passes (63.4%) for 3,528 yards and 31 touchdowns. Westlake finished 28–0–1 with Brees in the lineup and defeated Abilene Cooper 55–15 in the 1996 title game.
He was named to the state high school all-star football team and the USA Today All-USA high school football team with former San Diego Chargers teammate LaDainian Tomlinson. Brees wanted to play for the Texas Longhorns or Texas A&M Aggies like his father and uncle, but he was not recruited much.
On 17 March 2020, Brees signed a two-year, $50 million deal with the Saints. Brees completed 18 of 30 passes for 160 yards and two scores in the Saints’ 34–23 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and new quarterback Tom Brady.
