Rosa Parks started her career as an activist. Rosa Parks married a Montgomery barber in 1932. He was a member of the NAACP, which was fundraising for the Scottsboro Boys, a group of black men falsely convicted of raping two white women.
Rosa worked as a household worker and a hospital aide. She graduated from high school in 1933, when fewer than 7% of African Americans did.
Parks joined the Montgomery NAACP chapter in December 1943 and was elected secretary at a time when this was considered a woman’s duty. ‘I was the only woman there, and they needed a secretary,’ she subsequently said.
She worked as a secretary until 1957. “Women should be restricted to the kitchen,” she worked for local NAACP leader Edgar Nixon. “I need a secretary,” Parks said, “and you are a great candidate.”
